Students participated in a survey in English classes in order to be eligible for a assurance wireless free tablet that comes that has internet access within the 1Million Project, starting Friday 16th November. The survey was open to students from all classes.
Sprint has launched its 1Million initiative in October of 2017. The goal of the project is to give mobile devices as well as Internet access to 1 million students in high schools across America to assist students who need help to complete their homework and perform better at school. Sprint will give away Slate 8 Plus school tablets.
“Our goal is to deliver devices to students who really need them, and we’re talking about students who don’t have WiFi, don’t have a device at home,” said media specialist Anamaria Mitton. Mitton and deputy director Rhoshanda Pyles, and the IT system specialist Paul Vance are running the program at Watkins Mill.
The survey inquired about whether students had speedy Internet access or had a computer at home to gauge their requirements. First 50 participants who meet the requirements attended a session on the 19th of November, Monday to sign a consent form. The tablets were delivered on November 21st, on a Wednesday. Others who qualify will have be patient until Sprint gives them additional tablets.
If a student doesn’t get internet access WiFi in their home network, the student are able to use the tablet’s mobile data , and make it an internet hotspot for their mobile phone. Students receive 3GB of data each month and are able to keep the tablets until they graduate. Mobile data is cut off after two weeks when the student has graduated.
The school is hoping to collect tablets left over from graduates and reuse them for freshmen or other students who may need tablets.
“I like [the 1Million Project],” said teenager Demetrius Rush. Rush was given the tablet as part the program. “He has helped me a lot because I didn’t have a way to do my homework without a computer,” Rush said.
As of the time of writing 1152 out of 1,660 kids from Watkins Mill (69 percent) took part in the survey. 633 of the 1,152 students who took the survey (55 percent) are eligible for an iPad for free. The survey is available to take on this page .
“We want all of our students to have taken this survey,” Mitton said. “It’s hard because everyone has done so many polls that they don’t understand the importance of this poll.”
